Creating calm with Marie Fe and Jake Snow
Having met on a beach in Thailand, Marie Fe and Jake Snow continued to travel the world together, eventually swapping staying in hotels for setting up and running their own in Bali.
Now married with a son, and with a daughter on the way, the couple have made a home for themselves on the Spanish island of Mallorca.
On the verge of leaving the island after a spell of living there, the pair came across this townhouse in the city of Palma – and bought it straightaway.
‘It’s the first time we’ve had a home and it’s special to us,’ explains Jake.
‘A lot of the foundation was already here: the beautiful, vaulted ceiling, the limestone floors and arched windows, and then we saw that the terrace upstairs was 100 square metres. To have that kind of outdoor space within the city was incredibly rare, so on the spot we said we’d take it.’
A space for peace
For the 10-month renovation, the pair teamed up with friends Fabienne and Denis of Raíz Reforma on the island. ‘We gave them some moodboards and they handled everything,’ says Jake.
‘Creating a sense of timelessness is our north star; being able to imagine the space 50 years ago and to imagine it 50 years into the future. It’s not easy, but it’s what lights me up about styling, interior design and architecture.
‘The house, for me, is an escape from the craziness that is our life,’ he says. ‘A space that we can return to and drop everything and be in this place that just gives us peace.’
‘What excites me right now is enjoying this space with my son and my husband,’ confirms Marie. ‘Just waking up and making a cup of coffee in this beautiful place, preferably with friends or family visiting, and enjoying the calmness.’
Choosing Corston
Acknowledging that some of the smallest details in a space can have the biggest impact, the couple were keen not to cut corners when it came to architectural details and finishing touches.
‘One thing that Marie and I both like is reflective materials,’ explains Jake. ‘They add this sharpness and cleanness to a space, reflect light around and give you different angles.
‘When we saw the Corston switches and sockets in that beautiful, reflective polished nickel finish and saw the quality, we knew we wanted them.
‘I really enjoy the way the retractive switch bounces back, and the polished nickel looks like a high-quality, textured mirror.
‘When you walk past it, it’s reflecting light and creating art forms on the polished nickel. You can see colours in it, and waves in it, and when people come here it’s one of the first things they notice.
‘It’s like a highlight piece for us that breaks up the warmth and adds a contrast that works really well.’
