Reimagining an apartment with The Last Floor of Paris
‘My favourite part of renovating is bringing new structure to the spaces, especially in Paris where space is so limited, to make it as beautiful as possible.’
This is how Charlélie Colas, of Parisian design studio The Last Floor, explains his approach to his work, and to this recent project.
So how did that approach play out here? ‘With this apartment I broke through into the attic to get some height back and create a staircase and a whole new room: a small office.
‘For the rest of the apartment it was a matter of rearranging. The living room stayed the same. The current bedroom was the old kitchen and part of the bathroom. And I changed the old bathroom into the current bedroom and walk-in closet.’
The beauty of the space comes not just from the impressive restyling of a traditionally small Parisian home, which has enhanced the way the light plays throughout the space, but in the attention to aesthetic detail that’s evident throughout the project.
The kitchen’s stone splashback, for instance, was curved through an innovative process of trial and error that Charlélie brings to all his projects.
‘I would say my style is rather minimalist. I try to use raw materials, and to play quite a bit with textures and old materials. I like to use elements that have a story to give extra character.

And the architectural details?
‘I chose Corston because I was looking for switches, but in solid brass. When I saw the quality of the switches and their brass finish, Corston ticked all the boxes,’ enthuses Charlélie.
‘The great thing is that the whole theme of the apartment was brass and copper. I absolutely needed a brass finish on these light switches.’
In awe with what we found in this corner of the French capital, we couldn’t resist asking Charlélie for his renovation advice.
‘The most important advice I could give is to believe in yourself,’ he says. ‘Really going for it, not giving up, not being afraid to fail, that’s the essence of renovation.
But it’s a job where you see the progress you make every day. When you see where you started from, and where you manage to end, it’s one of the best feelings in the world.’
